Need an excuse to celebrate something today? January 31 is Inspire Your Heart with Art Day! While you probably won’t find this holiday on your calendar, it’s a good reminder to take a pause to ponder the unforgettable ways that art has made an impact upon your everyday life.
Art is so much more wholesome than the idea of the “starving artist” brushing paint onto a canvas – it’s a wide spectrum of human creations, powerful enough to tug on our emotions and make us shed a tear or burst out in laughter. These are the moments we carry with us in our hearts for a lifetime.
Today, we encourage you to explore this idea and inspire your heart through the short list of activities we’ve gathered below.
1) Visit a local gallery
Hanging in Rapid City for the day? From photography to sculpture, explore the work of up-and-coming and established artists in our local arts scene by visiting one of these galleries:
Bonzeye Studio by Bonnie Fleming
Dahl Arts Center
James Van Nuys Gallery
Rapid River Gallery
Reflections of South Dakota
Shaviq Studio & Gallery
Suzie Cappa Art Center
Trails End Gallery by Bill Groethe
2) That project from months ago you forgot all about? It’s calling your name!
Or perhaps a collection of projects – let’s be honest – just waiting for a bit of closure. If you’ve been long abandoned by the muse, now is the best time to dust off that old, forgotten project and approach it from a new perspective. Sometimes a work just needs a bit of time and space to breathe – then let the inspiration strike you all over again. If you’re still unsure about which direction to take next, ask a friend or a peer for a second opinion!
3) Browse the local record store or create a playlist on Spotify
To quote the late German philosopher Friedrich Nietzche: “Without music, life would be a mistake.” It’s hard to disagree with that statement – considering the fact that every human culture in recorded history has had music in some form. Scientific research also shows that listening to music boosts brain functioning and helps spark the creative process. So get your jam on and pick up a jazz record by an artist you’ve never heard of or listen to one of these 12 ready-to-go Spotify playlists to help you find your creative flow.

4) Share your project with #RCartlove on social media
We’d love to see what you’re working on! Promote your art and connect with fellow artists in the area, while expanding your fanbase and reach. According to Vogue, Instagram is now the most popular platform for under-the-radar artists to sell their work to audiences all over the world.
5) Host an Art Night at your home
BYOM (Bring Your Own Materials!) Invite your friends to bring a snack to share along with their sketchpads, paints, charcoals, sewing machine, or really WHATEVER your crafty little hearts desire. Hang out, swap ideas and feedback, and witness the collaborative action work its creative magic! (Or maybe it’s the wine.)
We hope you find something today that will inspire YOU – and remember to carry that feeling with you for the other 334 days that are left this year!
